Halen Carbonel, Class of 2024
Halen Carbonel, '24, wants to get more people involved in First Gen ND, a club focused on building community among first-generation college students on campus so they can feel supported.

Several weeks ago, our campus joined together to celebrate the ninth annual observance of Walk the Walk Week (WTWW). Nearly 30 events were held during the eight-day event, held in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. WTWW provided our campus the opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and how we can continue the work of eradicating racism, inequality, and injustice in our communities, nation, and world.

Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends took part in prayer, art performances and exhibits, community service, lectures and other shared experiences. The Office of Institutional Transformation was a partner in several events, including 1,000 Cut Journey: A Virtual Reality Learning Experience, the Black Excellence Dinner, the Black Images talent show, and Leading with the Power of Story: A Gathering for Women of Color and Allies.

During the week, you may have attended one event, or several; talked with your colleagues about how something impacted you; or jotted down something you learned or should explore further.

Now that the week is over, what’s next?

The University has asked the campus community to consider our next steps in building a more just, equitable, and inclusive Notre Dame and society. No next step is too small. Learn more about what others have committed to do by watching the video below.
